Advances in children’s gait evaluation

Gait is one of the most common ways of investigating human movement. The development of gait rises with age, and in children of about 7 years old, it seems to be mature.    

The evaluation of gait is especially important in the abnormal ways of moving due to illness or disability, but observing the typical way of moving, allows for comparison in changed conditions.   

Taking this into consideration, a study was designed to investigate gait parameters of healthy preschool and school children using the G-WALK, a wearable inertial sensor allowing for objective evaluation of the gait pattern, in a non-invasive way. 

The research showed a significant influence of age and large differences between boys and girls for most of the spatiotemporal parameters. 

Thanks to the latest technology, the gait parameters of healthy children may be the basis for analyzing the differences in atypical gait parameters.
